Your location
“Use my location” is only asked when you press it, and the result stays on this device. Prayer times are worked out in your browser. In our network test, pressing it and using every tool sent no request carrying coordinates or times you typed. Unless you tick “remember”, the coordinates are forgotten when the tab closes. What you save for that place is kept separately, as set out below.
Ramadan pages
If you pick a first day on a Ramadan page, that choice stays in this browser’s storage, under the name pt-f-ramadan, and is never sent to us. “Forget my first day” on the page removes it.
Saved places: exactly what is stored
From 55° a place needs its own choice of method or its own complete mosque match. If you save one for a typed or device location, this browser’s storage, on this device only, keeps:
- A hash of the place. It is made from the coordinates rounded to 2 decimal places (about 1 km), the clock zone, which side of 55° the place is on, and a random salt made on this device.
- The salt, in the same storage.
- What you saved under that hash: the method and limit, or the mosque offsets, their dates, and any mosque name you typed.
None of this is sent to us or anyone else, and it stays after the tab closes. A choice for a listed city is saved under the city’s name. If you tick “remember”, the coordinates themselves are saved too, unhashed.
What this protects against
- Someone who sees the saved entries without the salt can’t work out the place.
- The same place hashes differently on two devices, so ready-made lists of hashes don’t help.
- The hash is 128 bits, so a choice saved for one place can’t in practice unlock another. This matters: the choice decides whether a single Fajr is shown.
What it can’t protect against
Anyone with this browser’s storage has the salt too. They can try one place after another until a hash matches, and so find the place to about 1 km. The hash is repeated to slow that down, but it doesn’t stop it. So this is not one-way and not anonymous. Treat what’s saved here as private to anyone who can use this browser, and no more.
How to remove it
- Forget my place removes that place’s saved choice and match too, so retyping it asks again.
- Forget all typed places removes every typed or device place and the salt. Both are under “Another place” on the home page and the tool pages.
- Delete saved match removes one match. Clearing your site data removes everything.
What can still be seen
- City pages: opening
/prayer-times/united-kingdom/birmingham/tells our web host that page was requested, as any website address does. Our host’s logs hold IP address, page and browser for security. - Page counts: Umami, a cookieless tool we host, counts page views by page address, and counts a finished PDF, sheet, calendar file or saved match by the name of the tool’s page. It doesn’t get your coordinates, the file or what you typed, and doesn’t use the part of the address after the #. Your IP address reaches the counter’s server, as it does any website you open. Like most counters, it also receives your screen size, browser language, the page’s title and the address you came from (the referrer).
- PDFs for a typed or device location print the coordinates to 2 decimal places, about a kilometre, so they can be checked. Anyone you give the PDF to can read them.
- Wrong-time reports: the form on the About page sends nothing. If you choose to email a report, your email app sends it, and your address goes with it.
- Share links: what’s in a share link can be read by whoever you give it to. Your coordinates go into it only if you tick the box.
What else stays in your browser
Settings, your view (Simple or sky), your mosque sheet draft and logo are kept in this browser’s storage. Clear your site data to delete them. The last city page you opened is kept for this tab only, so a tool you open next starts on that city; it’s gone when the tab closes. The sky is drawn from the times calculated in this tab, and sends nothing.
Offline copy. So the site works without a connection, your browser keeps a copy of the pages and files you open from this site, plus about 10 pages saved ahead. Nothing is sent anywhere to do this. Clear your site data to remove it.
