Settings for Melbourne
Pick the setting whose times look like your mosque’s printed timetable. These are the settings that came closest to timetables we compared. They are not rulings.
- If it prints Isha at 17°, or near the times this page shows: try 18° / 17° (the starting setting). Islamic Council of Victoria: 0.1 min apart at Fajr and 0.1 at Isha on average (365 days).
- If it prints Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib all year: try 18° / sunset + 90 min. On 21 June Isha is 18:38 with this and 18:37 with the starting setting; on 21 December, 22:12 and 22:29.
- If it prints Asr 38 to 75 minutes later than this page, depending on the season: try the Hanafi Asr, in the method settings. In Melbourne the Hanafi Asr starts 38 to 75 minutes after the Shafi time through 2027, 54 on average.
- If it isn’t like any of these, or you aren’t sure: try Match my mosque. Type a few times from its timetable and the page finds the nearest of our settings.
A gap of a few tenths of a minute can mean a timetable is made with the same formula, not that two sources agree on their own.
Limits of these times
These times are calculated, not observed, and they can’t say which timetable your mosque follows.
- No short-night rule needed. The sun goes at least 18° below the horizon every night of 2027 in Melbourne, so the angle sets Fajr and Isha on every day with the starting setting.
- Near me and typed places. Outside the UK the starting setting changes at 48° north. Two places 0.02° apart across that line got Fajr up to 47 minutes apart and Isha up to 73 in 2027.
- Sea level. We calculate for sea level. Melbourne is about 25 m above it; allowing for that height would move sunrise and sunset by roughly 0.8 to 0.9 minutes (our estimate from the height, between 21 March and 21 June).
- One point for the whole city. Times are for 37.81° south, 144.96° east. Every 0.1° further east or west moves each time by about 24 seconds.
How these times are made
Your device works out where the sun is for Melbourne each day with adhan-js 4.4.6, the open-source library we use. Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun meets the horizon; Maghrib starts at sunset. Dhuhr starts 1 minute after the sun’s highest point. Asr is when a shadow reaches a set length. Fajr and Isha are when the sun is a set angle below the horizon, or a rule sets them where it never gets that low.
We checked the sunrise, noon and sunset this gives for Melbourne on every day of 2027 against NASA JPL’s Horizons: within 2.1 seconds. How prayer times are calculated · How we test.
