Settings for Birmingham

Pick the setting whose times look like your mosque’s printed timetable. These are the settings that came closest to timetables we compared. They are not rulings.

  • If it prints Fajr near 02:44 on 21 June: try Seasonal minutes (the starting setting). Birmingham Central Mosque: 9.5 min apart at Fajr on average (365 days).
  • If it prints Fajr near 01:09 on 21 June, much earlier in summer: try Fajr 18°, Isha 15°. Wifaqul Ulama 2026 PDF, Birmingham (Highgate): 0.1 min apart at Fajr with this setting, against 45.5 with the starting setting, on average over 365 days. The two settings are 45 minutes apart at Fajr on average through 2027, and 135 on 26 July.
  • If it prints Asr 28 to 75 minutes later than this page, depending on the season: try the Hanafi Asr, in the method settings. In Birmingham the Hanafi Asr starts 28 to 75 minutes after the Shafi time through 2027, 51 on average.
  • If it isn’t like any of these, or you aren’t sure: try Match my mosque. Type a few times from its timetable and the page finds the nearest of our settings.

A gap of a few tenths of a minute can mean a timetable is made with the same formula, not that two sources agree on their own.

Limits of these times

These times are calculated, not observed, and they can’t say which timetable your mosque follows.

  • Short summer nights. From 19 May to 26 July the sun doesn’t go 18° below the horizon in Birmingham, so a rule, not the sun’s angle, sets Fajr and Isha on those nights. With the starting setting the seasonal minutes set Fajr and Isha all year, not 18°. What the rules do.
  • The 55° line. Birmingham is about 280 km south of 55° north. At that line the seasonal formula changes: two places a few kilometres apart got Fajr 02:24 and 03:30 on 22 June 2027.
  • Near me and typed places. Outside the UK the starting setting changes at 48° north. Two places 0.02° apart across that line got Fajr up to 47 minutes apart and Isha up to 73 in 2027.
  • Sea level. We calculate for sea level. Birmingham is about 149 m above it; allowing for that height would move sunrise and sunset by roughly 2.6 to 3.5 minutes (our estimate from the height, between 21 March and 21 June).
  • One point for the whole city. Times are for 52.48° north, 1.90° west. Every 0.1° further east or west moves each time by about 24 seconds.

How these times are made

Your device works out where the sun is for Birmingham each day with adhan-js 4.4.6, the open-source library we use. Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun meets the horizon; Maghrib starts at sunset plus the 3 minutes this setting adds. Dhuhr starts 5 minutes after the sun’s highest point. Asr is when a shadow reaches a set length. Fajr and Isha are when the sun is a set angle below the horizon, or a rule sets them where it never gets that low.

We checked the same sums against NASA JPL’s Horizons at 18 places for 2027, within 2.7 seconds; Birmingham wasn’t one of them. How prayer times are calculated · How we test.

How the Birmingham figures were worked out

Worked out for this city with the starting setting: Seasonal minutes from sunrise and sunset (18° only if nearer). UK cities below 55° north start on “Seasonal minutes from sunrise and sunset (18° only if nearer)”. No UK source we read is the same as another, so this is a stated starting point, not a choice between them. Against local timetables we read for Birmingham: Birmingham Central Mosque (365 days of its 2026 timetable): Fajr 9.5 minutes apart on average, 22 at most; Birmingham Central Mosque timetable (read for one day, 2 November 2026, which is a warning and not a score): Fajr 10 minutes apart on average, 10 at most. This is often the later Fajr: on 196 days of 2027 it is later than Diyanet, AlAdhan, Wifaqul Ulama alike, by 18 minutes on average and 26 at most.

With that setting in Birmingham, the start time moves through 2027: Fajr time in Birmingham starts between 02:44 on 19 June and 06:37 on 1 January. Dhuhr time in Birmingham starts between 11:56 on 31 October and 13:19 on 15 July. Asr time in Birmingham starts between 13:37 on 5 December and 17:35 on 22 June. Maghrib time in Birmingham starts between 15:56 on 12 December and 21:38 on 23 June. Isha time in Birmingham starts between 17:30 on 6 December and 22:55 on 21 June.

Asr above uses the Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali reading. The Hanafi reading starts later: with this setting, Hanafi Asr time in Birmingham starts between 14:06 on 10 December and 18:50 on 22 June in 2027. You can switch Asr school in the method settings on this page.

Prayer times in Birmingham are also called salah times, salat times or namaz times. They are the same five daily prayers. Your mosque’s timetable comes first.
