Why Edinburgh has no starting setting
Follow your mosque’s timetable. This is arithmetic, not a ruling, and no scholar has reviewed it.
Edinburgh is above 55° north. The seasonal formula changes at 55° north: below the line it uses seasonal minutes or 18°, and from the line seasonal minutes or one seventh of the night, whichever is nearer to sunrise and sunset. So at the line one seventh sets the time from about 27 March to 16 September in 2027, and the seasonal minutes for the rest of the year. Two places a few kilometres apart, at 54.98° and 55.01° north, get Fajr 02:24 and 03:30 on 22 June 2027: a 66-minute jump. The gap is 30 minutes or more on 105 days of 2027, and Isha moves by up to 24 minutes.
We used to start here on that formula. On 21 June 2027 it gives Fajr 03:31, which is the latest of our settings. Software using the same arithmetic gives the same time, which shows the sums agree and nothing more. We found no Edinburgh timetable that supports it. The one local mosque page we read gave Fajr 05:13 on 1 November 2026, against 05:41 from that formula. One day is a warning, not a score. So we can’t state a reason to prefer one setting here, and we ask you to choose.

Settings for Edinburgh
Pick the setting whose times look like your mosque’s printed timetable. These are the settings that came closest to timetables we compared. They are not rulings.
- If it prints Fajr near 01:14 on 21 June: try Fajr 18°, Isha 15°. We haven’t compared a full-year Edinburgh timetable yet.
- If it prints Fajr near 03:31 on 21 June: try Seasonal minutes. We haven’t compared a full-year Edinburgh timetable yet.
- If it prints Asr 24 to 77 minutes later than this page, depending on the season: try the Hanafi Asr, in the method settings. In Edinburgh the Hanafi Asr starts 24 to 77 minutes after the Shafi time through 2027, 50 on average.
- If it isn’t like any of these, or you aren’t sure: try Match my mosque. Type a few times from its timetable and the page finds the nearest of our settings.
A gap of a few tenths of a minute can mean a timetable is made with the same formula, not that two sources agree on their own.
Limits of these times
These times are calculated, not observed, and they can’t say which timetable your mosque follows.
- Above 55° north. The sun doesn’t go 18° below the horizon here from 5 May to 8 August, and the seasonal formula changes at 55°, so we offer no starting setting. On 21 June 2027 our settings put Fajr anywhere from 01:14 to 03:31. Read why.
- Near me and typed places. Outside the UK the starting setting changes at 48° north. Two places 0.02° apart across that line got Fajr up to 47 minutes apart and Isha up to 73 in 2027.
- Sea level. We calculate for sea level. Edinburgh is about 66 m above it; allowing for that height would move sunrise and sunset by roughly 1.9 to 2.7 minutes (our estimate from the height, between 21 March and 21 June).
- One point for the whole city. Times are for 55.95° north, 3.20° west. Every 0.1° further east or west moves each time by about 24 seconds.
How these times are made
Your device works out where the sun is for Edinburgh each day with adhan-js 4.4.6, the open-source library we use. Sunrise and sunset are when the top of the sun meets the horizon; Maghrib starts at sunset and Dhuhr just after the sun’s highest point, each with the minutes the setting you choose adds. Asr is when a shadow reaches a set length. Fajr and Isha are when the sun is a set angle below the horizon, or a rule sets them where it never gets that low.
We checked the same sums against NASA JPL’s Horizons at 18 places for 2027, within 2.7 seconds; Edinburgh wasn’t one of them. How prayer times are calculated · How we test.
